BLACK ROSES NYC is pleased to share with you a limited run of silk scarves based on an original commission by the iconic ROSTARR, whose paintings, illustrations, graphic design and art direction have made him one of our community’s definitive creatives. The project was conceived as a touch of fresh “après cours” style, whether it’s worn post run at the track or when running late to Sunday brunch: each piece is an oversized 34in x 34in three-season silk, hand-dyed / hand-screened in the Hudson River Valley of upstate New York with 19th century discharge printing technique, whereby an acid burns the Rostarr design into the material while preserving the artist’s breathtaking brushstroke handstyle.
“When creating the artwork I experimented with different calligraphy pens and brushes until I found the right combination stylistically,” explains Rostarr. “You can tweak it forever, but you just know when it feels right and has the right flow and balance. It was important that the letters have a fluidity and rhythm, just like running—you need to pace yourself and get into the right cadence.”
Rostarr is currently showing at Opera Gallery, 115 Spring Street in NYC.
